What is your focus?

By Jodie Barrett | September 9, 2008

Have you ever noticed that when you focus all your energies on your goal you are able to create your own success. Yet, when you reverse this process the same thing happens. When working with coaching clients I ask them “What do you want?” The answer I most often hear is what they don’t want. I don’t want to feel so overloaded. I don’t want to follow this career path. I don’t want to be tired anymore. All their energy is focused on what they don’t want. Guess what~ that is what they get! Why? Because that is what you are focusing on. That is your goal. What happens when you become a new parent? Besides a sudden lack of sleep you also start to notice how many other new infants your friends have. You go to the mall, everyone has new babies. Before you know it there are new babies everywhere. But it is only your perception, personal experience and your focus that has changed. There as many new babies out there in the world as there ever have been.

“What do you want?”
1. Focus on what you want.
2. Create measurable actions
3. Engage in coaching
4. Achieve your goal.
Have you phrased what you want in a positive frame?
I will to reach my next career goal of….
I will make my first million by 35…
I will…

Question of the Day:
What do you want? What is your focus? What will you do?

    Hi Jodie,

Just wanted to say that I’ve started reading your blog. I’m wondering if you have heard about the book, “What Men Don’t Tell Women About Business”. I heard the guy (Chris Flett) on the Today Show and thought you probably have already heard of him. I’m wondering what your thoughts were. He seems to be really taking on the ‘Old Boys Club”. I just emailed him, but haven’t heard back.

Anyway, keep up the great writing.

    Best,

    Bihter.

Interesting thoughts. It’s the law of attraction in action. Successful people think about what they want most of the time while unsuccessful people think about what they don’t want most of the time. We go where our attention takes us.

    Hi Jodie,

I’ve been doing some additional research on the author, Chris Flett, that I talked about on my last comment. His company is “GhostCEO” (www.GhostCEO.com) and his book is a bestseller. I found it on Amazon here. Anyway, he was in the NY Times last Sunday under the “Career Couch” and he makes reference to women’s blogs like yours so I thought you might like to connect. I’d like to see you interview him and see what he’s all about. I saw on another blog he was a guest blogger. His email is: chris@ghostceo.com

    Best wishes,

    Bihter.

Really very nice thoughts. Successful people think about what they want most of the time while unsuccessful people think about what they don’t want most of the time. We go where our attention takes us.
    Thanks for providing this

Envision your life, as you want it to be and then passionately do what you can to live your dream life. Start today by writing down your personal and professional goals. Go beyond that. Write things you think sound impossible! Why not? Who are you going to hurt by dreaming big?
